Lady Indians split Thursday doubleheader

The Chipola softball team went on the road Thursday to take on Northwest Florida State. The Lady Indians defeated the Raiders in game one, 5-3, before dropping the nightcap, 6-4. 

Game One: 

The Raiders got on the board in the first inning with a two-run home run. 

In the the top of the second inning, the Lady Indians took the lead after the first three batters in the inning. Kinzie Nelson walked to lead-off the inning followed by a single to left by Madisyn RigginsZayla McBurrows gave Chipola the 3-2 lead with her first home run of the season.

Madisyn Riggins started the top of the fourth inning with a solo homerun, her second of the season. With one out, Marley Sims walked and then scored on a double off the bat of Sierra Jevyak. The Lady Indians' two runs in the inning extended their lead to 5-2. 

The Raiders would cut into the lead with a solo homerun in the bottom of the fourth. 

Kyra Ward would come in relief in the fifth inning with two outs to shut down the Raiders, leaving two runners on base. Ward finished the game without allowing a hit or run. 

Zayla McBurrows recorded the win, pitching 4.2 innings, allowing three runs and striking out five batters. 

Madisyn Riggins ended the game 2-for-3 with a solo homerun and two runs scored.

Sierra Jevyak was 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI.

Gabby Bess was also 2-for-3 with an RBI and stolen base. 

Game Two:

The Raiders took advantage of a pair of errors to put up four runs in the third inning and two runs in the fourth inning. 

In top of the fiftth, Sierra Jevyak and Karlee Back singled to get on base. With two outs, Ava Worthy singled to drive in both runners, cutting the deficit to 6-2. 

In the top of the seventh, Sierra Jevyak singled and Karlee Back walked to reach base safely. With two outs, Ava Worthy doubled to bring in both runners and cut the lead but the rally came up short as the Raiders escaped with a 6-4 win.

Kyra Ward came in to pitch in the final 2.2 innings, only allowing two hits and striking out four.

Ava Worthy ended the game 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI. 

Sierra Jevyak was 2-for-3. 

The Lady Indians are now 12-15 and 3-3 in the Panhandle Conference. Next up they host Pensacola State College for a Tuesday doubleheader. First pitch is set for 4PM.
