Baez named MVP at WBB Event

Lady Indians' upcoming sophomore Ashley Baez propelled her team to the championship at the NJCAA Women's Basketball Coaches Association All Star event played at Clayton State University in Atlanta on July 22 & 23.

The event split the NJCAAA's Top 40 returning players into four teams for the weekend event. Playing as a member of the Storm, Baez scored 29 points to lead her team to a 90-58 victory on Saturday. She followed that perfomance with a 22 point game in an 88-59 win in Sunday's championship game. Her two point totals were the top two tallies in the entire four-game tournament.

The 5'6 guard from the Dominican Republic made her presence known right from the start on Saturday. In the first half, Baez was 8-of-9 from the field including 3-of-4 from three-point range. In just under 16 minutes of playing time, Baez had 19 points and had her team out in front, 45-27.

She continued her torrid pace in the second half to finish the game shooting 11-of-13 from the field (5-of-6 from long range). Baez also hauled in five rebounds while dishing out seven assists.

On Sunday, Baez was a little slower getting started but still managed to lead all scorers at the half. With the Storm taking a 34-24 lead into the half, Baez had nine points, hitting 3-of-7 from the field and a perfect 2-of-2 from the charity stripe.

Baez poured it on in the second half to help claim the team championship and secure the event's Most Valuable Player award. She finished the game shooting 7-of-15 (4-of-9 from behind the arc) with four assists and four rebounds.

Chipola's Kaitlyn Bryant also participated in the event. Bryant averaged 7.5 points for her team, the Dream, which finished the event with a 1-1 record, Bryant finished the event shooting 6-of-14 from the field and 3-of-7 from three-point range.
