Lady Indians open conference play with a sweep of #25 Gulf Coast
Chipola will host a doubleheader with Pensacola State on Saturday starting at 1 PM
PANAMA CITY, Fla. - The Lady Indians (19-9; 2-0) opened Panhandle Conference with a doubleheader sweep of #25 Gulf Coast (18-14; 0-2) on Wednesday. The Lady Indians used their bats to get the game one win and then took care of the Lady Commodores from the circle in game two.
Game 1 - Chipola 15, Gulf Coast 3 WP: Hannah Worthington (9-3), 7 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 5 BB, 3 K
The Lady Indians scored 13 runs in the final two innings to win their Panhandle Conference opened over the Lady Commodores.
Trailing 3-2 after five innings of play, Chipola's first seven hitters reached safely in the sixth. Four hits and four walks helped the Lady Indians score six runs to take an 8-3 lead.
For good measure, Chipola belted out six more hits in the seventh to take a commanding lead over the home team.
Hannah Worthington pitched all seven innings to get the complete game win and improve her record to 9-3.
Irene Rabasco knocked in five runs and was 4-for-5 in game one with a double. Gabrie Flowers was also 4-for-5 in game one win.
Game 2 - Chipola 2, Gulf Coast 0 WP: Anyela Gomez Ruiz (3-2), 7 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 7 K
Chipola got another complete game win in the circle to shut out the Lady Commodores and earn the conference sweep on the road.
Anyela Gomez Ruiz allowed just 3 hits and 3 walks and struck out 7. After Gulf Coast loaded the bases with no outs in the first on a pair of singles and a hit batter, Gomez Ruiz retired the next six hitters. She did not allow another hit until the seventh inning.
Chipola struggled to get anything going in game two after using up most of their hits in the first game. The Lady Indians' first ten batters went down in order. With one out in the fourth inning, Irene Rabasco broke up the perfect game with a single but Chipola's next two hitters went down in order.
In a repeat of the fourth inning, Rabasco came to the plate with one out. This time she would take care of scoring herself. She hit her fourth home run of the year over the right field fence to give the Lady Indians a 1-0 lead.
Chipola would add a run in the seventh for insurance on a sac fly from Hannah Capps. Paris Rodgers started the inning with a single and was replaced by Kamryn Eaton on the bases. After Gabrie Flowers bunted her to second, Eaton reached third on a wild pitch to set up Capps' RBI.
