Lady Indians atop conference standings after sweep of TCC

The #9 Lady Indians not only swept Saturday's doubleheader against Tallahassee Community College; they also swept the season series, winning all five games against the Eagles.

Chipola came into Saturday's games in a three-way atop the Panhandle Conference with Northwest Florida and Pensacola. With the wins, the Lady Indians moved into sole possession of first place after two losses by Pensacola and the Raiders were idle on Saturday.

Game One: Chipola 5, Tallahassee 0

Zayla McBurrows picked up her 13th win of the 2022 season in game one as the Lady Indians defeated the Eagles 5-0. McBurrows allowed just three hits over four innings of work before turning the game over to Landyn McAnnally who picked up her third save of the season.

McAnnally threw three innings in relief and allowed just one hit while striking out two. McBurrows and McAnnally combined for the shutout by stranding twelve TCC baserunners.

Meanwhile the Lady Indians came through with clutch hitting with two outs to score all five of their runs in game one.

After Marley Sims reached on a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first inning and Janelle Martinez singled with one out, Kinzie Nelson doubled with two outs to give the Lady Indians an early 2-0 lead.

To start the second, consecutive singles from Hannah Atwood, Olivia Sasser, and Kamari Strozier set the table for a big inning for the Lady Indians. However, after Atwood was picked off at third and Marley Sims was out on a bunt that moved the runners up a base, Chipola was faced with needing a two out hit to score a run.

Jadyn Burney connected with a single into right field to plate Sasser and Strozier. After a wild pitch moved Burney to second, Janelle Martinez also singled through the right side to give Chipola the 5-0 lead.

Burney was 3-for-4 in the game with 2 RBI. Martinez (2-for-4, RBI) and Strozier (2-for-3) also had multi-hit games for Chipola.

Game Two: Chipola 5, Tallahassee 0

Charity Bibbs was dominant in the circle in as she held the Eagles to just four baserunners in game two. Bibbs pitched a complete game to improve her record to 3-0.

The Lady Indians again relied on clutch two-out hitting to jump out to an early lead in the second game of the doubleheader. After Marley Sims doubled to lead off the bottom of the first, a strikeout and ground out gave TCC a quick two outs. After Kinize Nelson went down 0-2 in the count, the Eagles chances of getting out of the jame were high.

After fouling off a pitch, Nelson hammered a pitch into right field to put the Lady Indians on the board.

Charity Bibbs then helped her own cause by taking the first pitch she saw over the ivy in centerfield for her 14th home run of the season. Nore importantly, it gave Chipola a 3-0 lead after one inning of play.

Chipola would add a run in the third inning on a fielder's choice by Olivia Sasser scored Bibbs, who was hit by a pitch with one out.

Marley Sims would give Chipola their final run of the day on a one out double in the sixth that plated Olivia Sasser, who had walked to lead off the inning.

Sims was 3-for-4 with an RBI in game two. Sierra Jevyak had two hits in three at-bats.

 

The Lady Indians improved to 35-5 on the year and 9-3 in the Panhandle Conference. Coach Brookins' squad will hit the road on Tuesday for a doubleheader at Gulf Coast State College. First pitch of game one is set for 4 PM,
