Lady Indians sweep Gulf Coast on the road

The Lady Indians (15-15, 6-3 PC) moved into a first place tie in the Panhandle Conference following a doubleheader sweep on the road at Gulf Coast State College. Chipola defeated the Lady Commodores 3-1 in game one and 6-3 in the nightcap.

Game 1:

The Lady Indians jumped out to an early lead in the first game and never trailed as Zayla McBurrows picked up her fourth win of the season in the circle.

Karlee Back started the game off with the first of her two doubles on the day. After an Ava Worthy sacrifice bunt moved Back to third, Gabby Bess drove in the first run of the game for her eleventh RBI of the season.

With one out in the second inning, Natalie Kopicova singled and moved into scoring position with two outs. Madisyn Riggns singled to drive in Kopicova and give the Lady Indians a 2-0 lead.

The Commodores cut the lead in half in the fourth but Chipola would get the run back in the sixth. Zayla McBurrows led off the inning with a single and stole second and third. With two outs, Marley Sims drove in McBurrows to stretch the Chipola lead to 3-1.

McBurrows allowed three hits and struck out eight. Kyra Ward came on in the seventh to get the save. McBurrows and Ward combined to retire nine of the last ten Gulf Coast hitters.

Game 2:

Game two started similar to game one. Karlee Back led off with a single and scored on Ava Worthy's first triple of the season to give the Lady Indians an early 1-0 lead.

Chipola would get another run in the second with hits from Sierra Jevyak and Madisyn Riggins.

The Lady Commodores took their first lead of the day in the bottom of the third. Three hits and a Chipola error led to three runs, giving Gulf Coast a 3-2 lead.

Chipola would fight back in the sixth inning. Sierra Jevyak had a 2 RBI double and Madisyn Riggins had a RBI single. The Lady Indians scored four runs in the inning to take the lead 6-3.

Kyra Ward relieved starter Leigha Kirby in the fifth to pick up the win. Ward got out of trouble in the sixth inning as the Lady Commodores loaded the bases. A fly ball to left field ended the inning and the threat.

Kirby and Ward each had three strikeouts in the circle.

Chipola will host a doubleheader with Tallahassee Community College on Friday beginning at 4 PM.
