Lady Indians go 2-2 in Conference Round Robin

All five Panhandle Conference schools converged on James Oates Park in Dothan, Alabama for a round robin tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Lady Indians went 2-2 on the weekend, defeating Tallahassee Community College and Gulf Coast State.

The Lady Indians are now 11-14 overall and 2-2 in Panhandle Conference play. Chipola will travel to Northwest Florida on Wednesday for a 4 PM doubleheader.

Game 1: Northwest Florida - 7     Chipola - 5

Northwest Florida used the long ball to win the first game of the tournament for both teams. Three home runs brought in six of the Raiders' seven runs as the Raiders defeated the Lady Indians, 7-5.

After falling behind 1-0, Chipola would tie the score in the third inning when Marlee Sims scored from third on Ava Worthy's squeeze bunt.

The Lady Indians would take the lead in the fourth, 3-1, taking advantage of walks and a Raider error. Chipola scored on a bases loaded walk and Worthy's second hit of the day.

A 6-run fourth inning from the Raiders would be too much for Chipola to overcome despite scoring a run in the fifth and the sixth.

Ava Worthy was 3-for-3 on the day with 2 RBI. Kinzie Nelson was 2-for-3 and Sierra Jevyak had an RBI double.

Game 2: Chipola - 11     Tallahassee - 3     (6 innings)

In Friday's second game, the Lady Indians powered their way to an 11-3 mercy rule victory using timely hitting and three home runs.

Chipola trailed the Lady Eagles 3-2 after four innings but a five-run fifth inning and a four-run sixth inning put the game out of reach.

Natalie Kopicova and Madisyn Riggins capped off the scoring in the sixth with back-to-back home runs.

Karlee Back was 2-for-4 and scored twice. Kopicova batted 2-4 with a home run, 3 RBIs, and two runs scored.

Madisyn Riggins went 2-for-4 with a solo home run.

Game 3: Chipola - 5     Gulf Coast - 2

The Lady Indians picked up their second win of the weekend behind a pair of strong pitching performances.

Leigha Kirby, making her second start of the weekend, threw four innings and didn't give up a run on two hits. Kyra Ward came on in relief in the fifth inning to get the save.

Chipola picked up two runs in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Kinzie Nelson led off the inning with a single and scored on Madisyn Riggins' double. Riggins would score later in the inning on a sac fly from Sierra Jevyak.

Consecutive hits with two outs would add a run for the Lady Indians in the fifth inning. After a double by Ava Worthy, Natalie Kopicova would single to drive in Worthy and make the score 3-0.

After the Lady Eagles would cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth, Chipola would answer back with two runs of their own in the sixth inning on Sierra Jevyak's 2-run home run.

Jevyak was 1-for-2 with 3 RBI. Kopicova finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI. Marley Sims also had two hits in the game.

Game 4: Pensacola - 3     Chipola - 1

Pensacola broke up a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the sixth with a lead off home run. The Lady Pirates would add a run in the inning to defeat Chipola 3-1.

Marley Sims was 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Zayla McBurrows picked up the loss despite only allowing six hits, three runs and striking out three in six innings pitched.
