GAMEDAY PREVIEW: #9 INDIANS & #8 MIDLAND MEET AGAIN IN HUTCH

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – With a win under its belt in the NJCAA Tournament, #9 Chipola (29-4) plays #8 Midland College (27-6) in the second round today at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. The Indians and the Chaparrals are set to tip-off at 4:30 p.m. central.

Chipola advanced to the second round with a 96-66 dismantling of Cape Fear Community College on Monday. Cliff Davis posted a career high 23 points in just sixteen minutes of playing time.

Midland received one of the eight byes into the second round after winning the Southwest District/Region V Championship.

The winner of today's game will get an off day on Wednesday before playing the winner of today's 3:00 p.m. game between #1 John A. Logan and #16 Monroe College. Thursday's quarterfinal game will tip at Noon.

Know Your Opponent

  • Time off: The Chaparrals haven't played since defeating Ranger College in the Region V Championship game on March 11.
  • Long time no see: Midland is returning to the NJCAA Tournament for the first time since 2012. The Chaparrals are making their 11th appearance in Hutch and have won the tournament twice, 1982 & 2007.
  • Thought you sounded familiar: Midland defeated Chipola, 94-75, in Chipola's last trip to the Championship Game back in 2007.
  • Chipola connection: Midland assistant coach James Demopoulos was a member of Coach Donnie Tyndall's staff in the previous two seasons. Midland player Roddrick Henry also spent time in Marianna in the fall of 2021.
  • Quick turnaround: Head Coach Tra Arnold has the Chaparrals back in the NJCAA in his first season at the helm. Midland was 12-17 in 2021-2022 and 1-14 in the COVID shortened season of 2020-2021.
  • Leading Scorer: Doug Young (Sophomore) 6'0 guard from Houston, Texas. Young averages 20.6 points per game and has started all 33 games for the Chaps.
  • Leading Rebounder: Keonte Jones (Sophomore) 6'6 forward from Madison, Wisconsin. Jones averages 6.3 boards per game and is also the team's second leading scorer at 17.2 ppg.

 Chipola Notes

  • Chipola's entire bench played on Monday with eleven of the thirteen players scoring in the opening round 96-66 win.
  • The 96 points scored by the Indians were the most by a Chipola team in the NJCAA Tournament since the 2008-2009 team scored 102 in a win against Connors State.
  • This will be the first time in this year's postseason that Chipola will be the visiting team and wear navy uniforms.
