Chipola Wins Opener, 7-3

Jay Estes went 2-5 and hit a home run, sparking the Chipola Indians (1-0) to a 7-3 victory over State College of Florida on Friday at Calvary HS in their season opener.

He singled in the first inning and homered in the second inning.

 

Landon Faulkner pitched lights out for the Chipola Indians. State College of Florida managed just two hits off of the the Chipola Indians' pitcher, who allowed one earned run, walked one and struck out five during his four innings of work.

 

Ronny Orta took the loss for State College of Florida. He lasted just three innings, walked one, struck out two, and allowed five runs.

The Chipola Indians went up for good in the second, scoring five runs on an RBI double by Ty Russ, a two-run home run by Estes, a groundout by Wood Myers, and an RBI single by Jose Caballero.

One run in the bottom of the third helped State College of Florida close its deficit to 5-1. An RBI double by Ricardo Rivera fueled State College of Florida's comeback. The State College of Florida threat came to an end when Faulkner finally got Keshawn Lynch to ground out.

The Chipola Indians matched their one-run fifth inning with one more in the eighth. In the fifth, the Chipola Indians scored on an RBI single by Michael Rojas, plating Michael Hickman.

Two runs in the bottom of the fifth helped State College of Florida close its deficit to 6-3. A passed ball and an RBI single by Ethan Skender triggered State College of Florida's comeback. The Chipola Indians stopped the rally after Addison Reed got Andrew DiLacqua to strike out.
