WOMEN'S & MEN'S BASKETBALL THIS WEEK
Chipola's Basketball teams have put themselves in position to be in sole possession of first place in the Panhandle Conference at the end of the week and strengthen their postseason resumes. The teams will travel to Raider Arena on Wednesday to take on Northwest Florida then travel to Hartsell Arena in Pensacola to face the Pirates.
The #3 Lady Indians (23-1; 5-1) sit behind #2 Northwest Florida in the NJCAA rankings, hold the #1 spot over the #2 Raiders in the FCSAA Coaches' Poll, and the two rivals are dead even at 4-1 atop the Panhandle Conference standings. Chipola defeated the Raiders, 67-57, on January 25 at The Milt. With a win, the Lady Indians can take the season series with the Raiders for the first time since the 2016-17 season when Chipola won all three games.
Having already won the season series with the Lady Pirates, the Chipola women will look for the sweep when they head to Pensacola State on Saturday. Chipola defeated the Lady Pirates, 65-56, in Pensacola on January 11, and then won 61-44 in Marianna on February 1. Chipola has not swept the Lady Pirates since the 2019-2020 season.
The #11 Chipola men's basketball team (19-5; 4-2) will look to keep pace with the #16 Pirates atop the Panhandle Conference standings on Wednesday when they travel to face #18 Northwest Florida in Niceville. Although the Pirates have defeated the Indians twice this season and have one more win in conference, the Indians are even with the Pirates in the loss column at two. Chipola controls its own destiny and can sit alone in first position with a pair of wins this week. The Pirates host Gulf Coast on Wednesday night.
Chipola won the first meeting with the Raiders, 67-57, on January 25, in Marianna and will look to win the season series on Saturday for the sixth consecutive year. The Raiders last won the series when they took two of three from Chipola during the 2018-2019 season. Northwest Florida is coming off of a 76-50 loss to Gulf Coast on Saturday that dropped the Raiders into a third-place tie with the Commodores in the conference standings. The Indians have won their last five games inside Raider Arena, going 2-0 against the Raiders in the 2023-2024 regular season and winning three games to take the 2034 FCSAA/Region VIII title, including another victory over the home team in the Championship game.
The Indians' kryptonite this season has been the league-leading Pirates of Pensacola State. Chipola's only two conference losses of the season have come to the Pirates. Chipola fell in the first conference game of 2025 on January 11 in Pensacola, 62-50, then lost at home, 71-63, on February 1. It was the first time a Donnie Tyndall-led Chipola team has lost back-to-back to a conference opponent and only the second time the Indians have lost a season series with a conference opponent under Coach Tyndall. Chipola has not been swept in a conference series since the Raiders won all three games in the 2016-2017 season.
