Lady Indians pick up road win to move to 8-0

The Lady Indians (NJCAA #2; FCSAA #2) played their first true road game on Saturday and came away with an impressive 78-51 win over FCSAA #8, Daytona State College Lady Falcons (3-2).

Another quick start helped Chipola jump out to an early lead as the Lady Falcons found themselves in a 10-0 hole just minutes into the game. It would be in the waning seconds of the first quarter before Daytona State would hit their first field goal of the game. After the first period of play, Chipola led 22-5.

Sophomore guard, Shimei Muhammad scored seven of her career-high 25 points to help the Lady Indians outscore Daytona State, 18-17, in the second quarter. The Lady Falcons found their stroke in the second quarter but Chipola led comfortably at the break, 40-22.

The Lady Indians continued to stretch their lead in the second half. Muhammad continued to shoot well from outside, hitting four three-point buckets for a toal of six on the night, another career-high.

Chipola led by as many as 33 in the game enroute to the 78-51 win that pushed their record to 8-0.

"This was a great win to start a five game road swing," said Chipola head coach Greg Franklin. "Shimei Muhammad had a tremendous night and Ta'Shonna Wright-Gaskins added 19. Shcira Fowles also had another double-digit night in rebounds."

The Lady Indians will head south to take on Miami-Dade College on Tuesday. Chipola defeated the Lady Sharks (3-7) two weeks ago in the FCSAA Shootout in Melbourne, 95-40.

Chipola will also take on Palm Beach State College on Wednesday before returning home.

More from Coach G

"Great win on the road especially being short handed again without (Ashley) Baez. Looked down the bench several times tonight and wanted to call her name. Shimei Muhammad showed up and showed out! She shot the ball extremely well but I was more pleased with her leadership tonight."
