Chipola set to host full slate of games this weekend

MARIANNA, Fla. – Teams from three different states will meet this weekend at Jeff Johnson Field for a full slate of games starting Friday morning at 10 AM.

The Indians (5-7) will play four games this weekend beginning with a doubleheader on Friday. Chipola will take on Miami-Dade (7-5-1) at 1 PM followed by St. John's River (11-3) at 4 PM.

Chipola will play single games on Saturday and Sunday against a pair of out-of-state teams.

At 1 PM on Saturday, the Indians will take on East Mississippi Community College (3-1) from Scooba, Mississippi.

The weekend will wrap up when Chipola and Columbia State Community College (1-5) from Columbia, Tennessee hit the diamond at 11 AM on Sunday.

 Game Notes

  • JeanPierre Ortiz leads the Indians at the plate with a .405 average. Ortiz also has three home runs in 12 games. Brady Browning leads the team in home runs with 4.
  • Sophomore transfer Dillon Haines leads the Indians on the mound with a 2-0 record and 0.84 ERA.
  • East Mississippi head coach Brett Kimbrell was an assistant coach at Chipola in the 1980's under head coach Bobby Pierce.
  • The Indians faced Miami-Dade and St. John's River last year in the postseason. Chipola defeated St. John's River in the Regional twice to advance to the State Tournament where they were eliminated by Miami-Dade.
  • Chipola defeated Miami-Dade two weeks ago, 10-9, at the Visit PCB College Baseball Classic.
  • Columbia State is coached by interim co-associate head baseball coaches, Desi Ammons and Cody Crutcher. After former head coach Mike Corn resigned to join the Walters State coaching staff, Ammons and Crutcher were named to the shared position.
