Conference Preview: Lady Indians look to take down #1 Raiders

The 2021 FCSAA Champions and the 2021 NJCAA Champions will meet for the first of at least three 2022 meetings between the two teams on Thursday night at 5:30 PM in Raider Arena on the campus of Northwest Florida State College. The #6 Lady Indians (16-1; 1-0) will head to Niceville with their sights set on defeating the defending national champions, and current #1 team in the nation, Raiders (15-0; 1-0).

Both teams started Panhandle Conference play on Tuesday with wins. Northwest Florida traveled to Gulf Coast State and used a strong second half to defeat the Lady Commodores, 74-68. The Lady Indians defeated Tallahassee inside The Milt, 75-52.

Game Notes:

  • Lady Indians won 4 of 5 games inside Raider Arena in 2021 including a 59-58 win over the Raiders and three wins in the FCSAA/Region VIII that resulted in a State Championship.
  • Both teams advanced to the NJCAA Final Four last season with Northwest Florida winning the National Championship in Lubbock, Texas.
  • The Raiders only allow opponents 42.8 points per game, the lowest average in the country. The Lady Indians are 8th in the country in points scored per game.
  • In previous top ten matchups this season, Chipola is 2-1 with wins over Georgia Highlands (#9) and Jones College (#3). Their only loss was to Shelton State (#6) at the Lake Charles New Year's Classic. All three teams are still curently ranked in the top ten.
  • On November 26, Northwest Florida defeated South Plains College (#6), 48-42, in their only game against a top ten opponent. South Plains is no longer ranked in the Top 25.
  • Last-Tear Poa, a 5'11 guard, leads Northwest Florida in scoring, averaging 14.3 points per game. Poa was the 2021 NJCAA Tournament Most Valuable Player.

Elsewhere in the Panhandle Conference Tonight

#16 Pensacola State (12-1; 0-0) hosts #19 Gulf Coast State College (11-5; 0-1).

Tallahassee Community College is idle.
