Chipola tops State College of Florida in back-and-forth affair, 5-2

Chipola and State College of Florida passed the lead back and forth four times on Saturday at Bradenton, FL, but in the end Chipola pulled out a 5-2 win in seven innings over State College of Florida.

Chipola took the lead in the fifth inning and held on for the victory. An error scored Lazaro Rivera and gave Chipola the lead for good.

Rivera went a perfect 3-3 at the dish for Chipola. He doubled in the fifth inning and singled in the third and sixth innings.

Chipola got the win thanks in large part to Mac Marshall's dominant, eight-strikeout performance. Marshall allowed one earned run on five hits and one walk over five innings.

Ryan Ahern couldn't get it done on the hill for State College of Florida, taking a loss. He lasted just 1 1/3 innings, walked none, struck out one, and allowed no runs.

Chipola closer Gunnar McNeill put away the final six outs to record the save.

Chipola jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. A single by McNeill, scoring Rivera started the inning off.

Chipola piled on two more runs in the top of the sixth. The inning got off to a hot start when Rivera singled, plating Jay Estes. That was followed up by Kevin Santa's triple, scoring Rivera.
