Indians shut down Pirates, 7-0

Chipola sophomore pitcher Michael Mader earned his first Panhandle Conference win of the season and Indians picked up 11 hits as a team to ease by the Pensacola State Pirates 7-0 Monday night in Marianna.

With the win, the Indians improved to 27-7 overall and 6-2 in Panhandle Conference action, while the Pirates dropped to 11-27 and 1-10 in the league.

Mader pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings to get his fourth win of the season and his first in league play after struggling in his first two starts against Gulf Coast State and Tallahassee.

The sophomore left-hander still had some command issues with seven walks, but he minimized the damage by allowing just two hits and striking out five.

Jo Jo Durden got the Indians out of a major jam in the top of the seventh inning, inheriting a bases-loaded, two-out situation from Mader and striking out Nicholas Junger to end the threat.

It was the second time the Pirates left the bases loaded on the night, with the biggest jam of the night coming for Chipola in the second inning when walked the first three batters of the inning.

Mader worked out of it by striking out Will Mullen and Andy Chacon swinging before getting Tate Sweatt to fly out to right field for the final out.

The Indians got on the board with an RBI single by Ian Rice in the first inning, with an RBI groundout by Josh Merrigan to score Danny Mars in the bottom of the fourth making it 2-0.

Taylor Mauck tacked on a two-run home run in the fifth and Mars followed with an RBI double to score Cody Lanford to make it a 5-0 Chipola lead.

After getting out of the seventh inning unscathed, Durden closed the door on the Pirates with a perfect eighth inning and a ninth in which he issued a lead-off walk to Hunter Hall before retiring the next three batters and striking out Sweatt to end the game.

Durden struck out four in 2 1/3 innings and walked one, while Thomas Huston took the loss for Pensacola for giving up five earned runs on nine hits and two walks with four strikeouts in five innings.

Kevin Santa led the Indians with three hits to go with an RBI and a run, with Mars going 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, Lanford 2-for-4 with two runs, and Mauck 1-for-4 with a run and two RBI.

Rice was 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI and Merrigan drove in two runs.

Ulysses Fluellen and Marcus Morrisette had the only hits of the night for the Pirates.
