MARIANNA, Fla. – In 1974 the first Chipola Indian donned a Major League Baseball uniform. Since that time, twenty-eight other players who have worn a Chipola jersey have gone on to suit up for an MLB team. In addition, Buck Showalter, who played at Chipola in 1976, has been the manager of five different big league teams, including his current position with the New York Mets.
Since 1997, Jeff Johnson has been the head coach at Chipola. In his twenty-seven seasons, Johnson has coached nineteen of Chipola's big leaguers including four MLB All-Stars (Jose Bautista - 6x; Russell Martin – 4x; Patrick Corbin - 2x; Adam Duvall - 1x). In 2017 alone, Chipola had 11 players drafted, tied for for the most that season with Stanford University, University of Texas, and the University of Michigan. Over 150 of Johnson's players have been drafted during his Chipola tenure.
Twenty-one of Johnson's former players are currently on professional rosters, including three players who are on big league clubs.
Patrick Corbin, a left-handed pitcher from Clay, New York, is in his eleventh season in Major League Baseball. Corbin, who was selected in the second round of the 2009 draft by the Los Angeles Angels, spent six seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
In 2018, Corbin agreed to a deal with the Washington Nationals. In his first season in the nation's capital, Corbin was 14-7 on the mound and helped lead his team to their first World Series title in franchise history. Corbin, pitching in relief of Max Scherzer, got the win in the seventh game of the series when the Nationals rallied past the Astros to claim the title.
After 5 seasons in minor league baseball, Jose "Chema" Caballero, made his MLB debut as a defensive replacement with the Seattle Mariners on April 15. In his debut in the Show earlier this season, he came in as a defensive replacement for shortstop J.P. Crawford in the 9th inning of a 9-2 win over the Colorado Rockies. His first at-bat came on April 18 against the Milwaukee Brewers. After hitting safely just three times in his first 20 at-bats, Caballero is batting .421 in the month of May.
In 2017, Caballero was named the Most Valuable Player when helped lead the Indians to the JUCO World Series Championship in Grand Junction, Colorado. A couple of weeks later, he was drafted in the seventh round with the 202nd overall pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Boston Red Sox outfielder, Adam Duvall, is currently on the injured list after fracturing his left wrist earlier this season. Playing his first season in Boston, Duvall was off to a hot start prior to the injury. In eight games, Duvall was batting .455 with five doubles, one triple, four home runs, and fourteen RBIs.
After one season with Chipola in 2009, Duvall transferred to the University of Louisville. He was selected in the eleventh round of the 2010 MLB Draft by the San Francisco Giants. Duvall has been a member of six different clubs including the Atlanta Braves where he helped lead the team to the 2021 World Series title.
